Steeplechase racing returns to NYRA for another season with the inaugural Beverly Steinman hurdle handicap at 2 ⅜ miles around 5 turns over 9 jumps in race 1.

The summer season features 4 races on Wednesdays at Saratoga and the first 3 races on Thursdays at Colonial Downs. The Colonial Downs races will have parimutuel wagering for the first time in over 10 years.

Thanks to Steve Byk’s Derby Trail site, I’m happy to continue to post my steeplechase selections for the 9th year.

#! L’Imperator is the top selection in race 1. #1 L’Imperator has the best flat track speed and does not use Lasix on a regular basis. He carries 152 pounds and has Irish steeplechase jockey Jordan Gainford.

#6 Freddy Flintshire is the next choice who always runs well on flat tracks for trainer Keri Brion.

#7 Awakened also runs well on flat tracks and was close to top steeplechase runner Snap Decision but carries 158 pound high weight.

The pace will be strong early with #8 West Newton who will try to go coast to coast but does not get the benefit of Lasix today and will fade approaching the backstretch the last time. The race sets up for a stalker/closer.

Selection:

A) #1 L’Imperator

B) #6 Freddy Flintshire, #7 Awakened

Good Luck at the races!
